Goldblum s-a nascut in suburbia West Homestead din Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia, fiul lui Shirley, o prezentatoare radio care mai tarziu a condus o firma de echipament culinar, si al lui Harold Goldblum, doctor. Are o sora, Pamela si un frate mai mare, Lee. Un alt frate mai mare de-al lui, Rick, a trait numai pana la varsta de 23 de ani. Familia lui este evreasca si a apartinut unei sinagogi ortodoxe. Bunicul lui Goldblum din partea tatalui a emigrat din Rusia iar cel din partea mamei, din Austria.

Goldblum s-a mutat in New York la 17 ani pentru a deveni actor. A lucrat si a studiat pe scena renumitului teatru Neighbourhood Playhouse sub indrumarea profesorului de actorie Sanford Meisner. Si-a facut debutul pe Broadway intr-o punere in scena a piesei The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Este un pianist de jazz excelent si a declarat ca in cazul in care nu ar fi devenit actor, ar fi urmat o cariera profesionala in muzica. Debutul sau in cinema a fost cu rolul unui talhar in filmul Death Wish, cu Charles Bronson, in 1974.
